The approach

• Nurture a sense of community and collaboration by encouraging membership of an exclusive consortium of academia, industry and other key stakeholders
• Engage regularly with the consortium via a mix of social media, e-news and member events: from invite-only workshops to an AGM and international summit
• Raise wider awareness and credibility by showcasing new projects, interim updates and insights gleaned
• Encourage new talent into the sector via undergraduate, graduate and women in aquaculture programmes.

Key outcomes

Within its first five years, SAIC had grown from no brand to 200-strong member consortium, generating over £3 of private investment in applied research for every £1 of public money.
